Paxton is an incredible eight year old whose strength, resilience, and joyful sense of humour inspire everyone who meets him. He has six medical diagnoses, and is supported by a dedicated team of specialists who carefully oversee his care. Over the years he has gone through ten surgeries as well as countless blood tests, MRIs, ultrasounds, X-rays, EEGs, ECGs, and regular physical and occupational therapy. Because of the complexity of his diagnoses, we often find ourselves explaining them to various medical professionals, something we have learned to do with confidence because Paxton has shown us what true courage looks like.
Our family’s journey with Ronald McDonald House began in October 2019 when Paxton had his first spinal cord surgery. We were told to expect a ten day hospital stay. Instead, the next two months were filled with unexpected challenges and three revision surgeries. We would finally get home, only to turn around and be back in Saskatoon again. During that time, my husband would bring our older son in on weekends and stay with us at Ronald McDonald House so we could be together. That time together helped us feel grounded when everything around us felt unpredictable.
From the moment we walked through the doors of Ronald McDonald House, we felt acknowledged, safe, and genuinely cared for. It became a place where our family could pause, absorb overwhelming medical information, and feel supported during some of the hardest moments we have ever faced. Every stay, whether short or long, made us feel welcome, valued, and loved.
Before every surgery, Paxton sleeps soundly at Ronald McDonald House. Knowing he begins those challenging days feeling calm, warm, and secure is something I hold close to my heart. One Christmas, when both my husband and my son were hospitalized at the same time, we stayed at the House. That period was incredibly painful for our family, and yet the support we received brought comfort and light into a season that would have otherwise felt unbearably heavy.
Today, Paxton is strong, healthy, and full of life, even though his medical journey continues. We are beyond proud of his courage, his determination, and the hopeful way he faces every challenge. Ronald McDonald House has been a constant source of strength, stability, and compassion for our family throughout every stage of his journey.
We are also grateful for the lifelong friendships we have made there. The families we met within those walls understand a part of our lives that few others ever will, and the bonds created during shared moments of fear, hope, and love will stay with us forever.
Paxton has taught us that even in the most difficult times, there is always light. Ronald McDonald House has been one of those lights, and our family will always carry deep gratitude for everything they have given us.
