Plant & House Décor Volunteer

As a member of the Ronald McDonald House Saskatchewan Volunteer Team, you play a significant role in creating a warm and welcoming environment for the families who stay here. Under the direction of the Facility Coordinator, you are responsible for the ongoing care and health of our indoor plants as well as assisting with organizing and refreshing common spaces ensuring that families are comfortable and support seasonal décor changes. Living plants not only add beauty, but also purify the air, soften shared spaces, and offer families a comforting connection to the familiar sights and feelings of home. Plants often spark conversation and connection between volunteers, staff, and other families, which can bring comfort during a challenging time. By caring for the plants and floral arrangements in the House, you contribute to a space where every family feels respected and at home. Qualifications:

  • Ability to engage with the public, staff, families, & other volunteers in a supportive, friendly and hospitable manner 
  • Ability to read non-verbal cues from families and volunteers alike, and are able to adapt tone, volume, and approach appropriately 
  • Enthusiastic and willing to take initiative 
  • Possess qualities of friendliness, dependability, tact, flexibility and confidentiality 
  • Willingness to take a Food Safety Course (provided through Ronald McDonald House Saskatchewan) 
  • Able to pass a Criminal Record check  

Responsibilities:

  • Care for and maintain all living plants at Ronald McDonald House SK Prince Albert  
  • Water, fertilize, prune and re-pot all plants as necessary based on seasonal changes 
  • Ensure all plants are in appropriate spaces for their optimal health 
  • Make suggestions for new and replacement plants 
  • Refresh and thoughtfully arrange dining room and shared space bouquets often (weekly/bi-weekly) 
  • Ensure all family spaces are organized, welcoming, and respectful of diverse traditions 
  • Rearrange furniture and décor to ensure family comfort- keeping spaces fresh for repeat and long-term families 
  • Redecorate or update decor where needed and in agreement with the Family Service & Programs Associate 
  • Adhere to all Ronald McDonald House Saskatchewan Protocols, Procedures & Policies 
  • Check in at the Volunteer Gathering Place at the beginning of your shift to check for important updates and information 
  • Always wear your nametag for every shift 
  • Become familiar with Better Impact volunteer database, and use for cancelations or filling shifts

  • Must be 19 years or older 
  • Provide and pass a background check and provide 2 personal references  

Seasonal Responsibilities:

  • Spring/Easter
    • 1st week of April (1 day) 
      • Anything Easter (eggs/bunnies) should be stored within 2 weeks 
    • End of May- Spring décor goes away, and quilts/wall hangings are replaced with generic spring colors 
  • Summer
    • End of May/June- (1 day) 
      • Exchange quilts/wall hangings for green/blues/summer themes
  • Fall
    • 2nd week of September (2 days) 
    • Exchange quilts/wall hangings  
    • Fall exists until 2nd/3rd week of November 
  • Winter
    • 2nd/3rd week of November 
    • Exchange quilts/wall hangings  
    • Trees remain decorated in-House storage, and are placed out according to photos 
      • Most of winter goes away in January, just to keep storage arranged nicely.  
      • Winter quilts will get exchanged from Christmas Quilts- this remains until Spring 

Training & Support:

  • General orientation and training will be provided  
  • Role specific training will be provided 
  • Continuing training and learning opportunities will be offered to all volunteers  

Time Commitment:

  • One Weekly shift of 2–3 hours for a commitment of 8 months to one year
