Home for Dinner Volunteer

As a member of the Guest Experience Volunteer (GEV) Team you play a significant role in ensuring all guests and visitors to Ronald McDonald House Saskatchewan are greeted and welcomed with exceptional hospitality into the House environment. In addition, you help create a friendly and comfortable environment by assisting with the daily operations of the House, and supporting families as needed. The GEV is under the direction of the Guest & Volunteer Relations Associate. We value teamwork and collaboration and are grateful you are part of the Ronald McDonald House SK Prince Albert Team! You will act as an ambassador of Ronald McDonald House Saskatchewan and our values both in the House and in the community.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to engage with the public, staff, families, & other volunteers in a supportive, friendly and hospitable manner 
  • Ability to read non-verbal cues from families and volunteers alike, and are able to adapt tone, volume, and approach appropriately 
  • Enthusiastic and willing to take initiative 
  • Possess qualities of friendliness, dependability, tact, flexibility and confidentiality 
  • Willingness to take a Food Safety Course (provided through Ronald McDonald House Saskatchewan) 
  • Able to pass a Criminal Record check  

Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to all Ronald McDonald House Saskatchewan Protocols, Procedures & Policies 
  • Check in at the Volunteer Gathering Place at the beginning of your shift to check for important updates and information 
  • Always wear your nametag for every shift 
  • Become familiar with Better Impact volunteer database, and use for cancelations or filling shifts 
  • Check in with Family Service & Programs Associate for shift-specific direction and context on the donor group 
  • Welcome donor groups warmly, helping them get settled, explaining processes, and guiding them in a way that fosters both service to families and team building among themselves 
  • Act as the liaison between corporate/community groups who are participating in the Home for Dinner program. 
  • Assist with set-up and clean-up, including setting out dinnerware and storing leftovers properly  
  • Become familiar with the kitchen with respect to kitchen policies, procedures and processes 
  • Follow all food safe course guidelines 
  • Work collaboratively with the Family Service & Programs Associate to develop a sustainable Home for Dinner schedule 
  • Connect with Family Services to meet any Day Use guests. Extend a personal welcome and offer to answer any questions they may have about the House (Family Service team will be on hand to provide Day Use Guests a tour following supper) 
  • Verbally thank donor groups for their time and contribution, ensuring they feel appreciated for both their generosity and the impact on families. If the evening is slow, remind the group that families often return to the House late for dinner and leftovers will be appreciated. Thank groups for their time and let them know that a feedback survey will be shared with them by email in the coming days

  • Provide and pass a background check and provide 2 personal references  

Training & Support:

  • General orientation and training will be provided  
  • Role specific training will be provided 
  • Continuing training and learning opportunities will be offered to all volunteers 

Time Commitment:

  • 1 shift per week for 8 months to 1 year  
  • Shift times vary from 2 – 4 hours depending on donor group/volunteer availability
