The Roque Family

“Our first experience with Ronald McDonald House Saskatchewan occurred when my firstborn decided to come out early. He was only 29 weeks, weighing 958 grams when he was born on November 26, 2023, I guess he wanted to celebrate his first Christmas with us.”

Before coming to Ronald McDonald House Saskatchewan, I remember feeling overwhelmed by what happened to me, and to us. We were first-time parents. At that time we did not know about Ronald McDonald House Saskatchewan existed. I was sad thinking that we needed to spend some time in the hospital as my son needed to gain weight and strength. No one would want to stay in the hospital with your firstborn or your children right?

Living and staying in Ronald McDonald House Saskatchewan was a big help for me and my husband. We were just minutes away from our son. We were from here in Prince Albert but when we stayed in Ronald McDonald House Saskatchewan we felt like were home. Having a place where you can have a nice shower and also have a home-cooked meal. It’s like a home away from home to us. The staff was so friendly and approachable. They were so nice asking us every day how our day was, how were we feeling, and offering us what they could offer. They treated us like family.

When I first walked into the room where we would be staying I remember thinking that this is so sad staying and sleeping here in this nice room while our son was staying in the hospital in his incubator alone. But also I remember saying to my husband “Wow, this room is amazing, we’ve got everything we need, and twice as big as our own room in our house”.

Leaving Ronald McDonald House Saskatchewan left us with some mixed emotions. We can finally bring our kiddo home. No wires, no tubes, no nurses, no doctors, just us.

Now that we’ve stayed at Ronald McDonald House Saskatchewan I would tell others that Ronald McDonald House Saskatchewan made a huge impact on our NICU journey. Without the people that helped us how to cope with the stress and sadness, it will be so hard for us.
